^What games are you playing that that's a problem? I honestly don't think I've ever heard anyone say that modern games have *less* story unless they're talking about Ubisoft exclusively AAA sandbox games.

I like the general aesthetic of old games - the graphics, the sounds, the music. There's like a spectrum in my head of how aesthetically pleasing video games are from the old days to now. Games can look and sound pretty in 8-bit and 16-bit. Then you get into that awkward phase when everything was blocky as we ventured in to the 3D realm. Things don't feel aesthetically pleasing for me (i.e. Final Fantasy VII). But then we got better and things are really pretty now in the 3D world.

I feel like the only person on earth who likes blocky graphics. Idk, they're endearing.

there were a lot of games for the n64 that are still aesthetically pleasing, especially some of Rare's games

I didn't say that modern games have less story. I meant it more like games where you can't effectively change the plot with your decisions. Skyrim, Mass Effect, etc. Not saying I don't enjoy those games. Just saying I missed when every game had a specific story where you couldn't change certain outcomes.

(I miss games having actual plot lines not your pave your own way kinda thing.)

This isn't an "older game" trope. Older games didn't give two **** about plotline and, at best, would provide a paragraph to explain why you're playing the game and, even then, most didn't care.

For me, side-scrollers are definitely a trope of older games...just really rare to see a AAA company putting one out. Thankfully, we have a lot of small-time indy guys keep side-scrollers alive but that's it.

Obviously, there's challenge as an aspect of older games since developers didn't give a crap if you could beat their games. So this coddling of the modern gamer to make sure they don't quit and swear off buying future games is certainly something that came later.

Getting a complete game and not worrying about patches, retcons, DLC and other junk was pretty dang nice.

And music...just feels like music as a whole was better than. A lot of modern games clearly go to the same companies that churn out generic movie music now so a lot of game music is "mood music" that doesn't stand out. A lot of games have music done "in house" on synthesizers which I think lent to some more creative work. So the quality of the music with full orchestras is definitely better but the creativity behind it is not.

There's still a ton of great music, but it's rarely in the games that get all the marketing dollars. AAA music definitely isn't as interesting as it used to be.

I will say, I do kinda see where you're coming from regarding a lot of the big-budget games. There are definitely modern games with great OSTs; see Octopath Traveler, Cadence of Hyrule, etc. But I do kinda see that trend toward mood music in AAA games.
