Will Esports ever be as popular as regular sports?

Do you think Esports will ever become as popular as football, basketball or baseball? Will the finals of say, an Overwatch tournament be viewed by as many people as the Super Bowl?

I feel like we've had this topic not too long ago. I think eSports has the potential to crush real sports but probably won't, and definitely not for a long time.

One major obstacle is creation. They don't make new sports often or change them all that much, at least anymore. Street Fighter has to reinvent the wheel and not suck every time or a huge part of a pillar of eSports is dealt a blow.

I think even if eSports does take over it'd be a rocky and possibly temporary reign.

You'd have to give it at least twenty years and some long term stars, I think. If you have a fast turnover rate you're not getting anything.

Probably not. Sports are ingrained in human culture, history and behavior.

After the coronacalypse, there will exist only Elon Musk and The Cult of Electronic Sports to defend humanity from the Laser Gators.

The only way the finals of Overwatch league will get super bowl level numbers views, is if it is played by the Victoria secret fashion show models one hour before the Superbowl is aired on Fox.

I probably could have used a game besides Overwatch as an example, as its popularity has been on the decline in recent years. It's only 17th in the categories on Twitch.

I dunno, maybe one day? Regular season NBA and MLB game numbers are going down, but NFL and NCAA football games are still big deals because they play less games and happen on weekends when more people can watch.

Esports is still very niche. It'll probably increase in the years to come. The EVO Finals of SSB last year had a little under 280,000 total Twitch viewers. I'd assume a lot of local market broadcasts of pro sports teams are higher than that, and nationally televised games are still doing millions of viewers even with declining viewers for some leagues. When we're talking about "maybe one day big Esports championships will consistently get more viewers than regular season baseball games" that still means there's a ways to go.

That's in America, of course. If we're talking about worldwide, there's obviously a lot more appeal. There are League events that do millions and millions in viewership in China especially. But if we're talking about worldwide appeal, it's still lagging behind soccer massively (I believe the World Cup final was close to if not a billion worldwide).

So there are Esports strongholds in Asia, but will it translate to being a huge thing in America? I don't think so. Our sports market is already incredibly bloated and there's not much more room for another sport as far as mainstream appeal goes. But Esports doesn't have to have mainstream appeal. The average American doesn't have to care. It's still appealing to tons of people Stateside and is a multi-million dollar industry.

The problem isn't doing Superbowl numbers, the problem is going to be consistency. eSports already rivaling Superbowl viewership and I remember they passed NBA at one point.

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/14/league- ... -next.html
This esports giant draws in more viewers than the Super Bowl, and it's expected to get even bigger. Over 10,000 "League of Legends" fans descended upon St. Louis, Missouri this weekend. More than 600,000 people watched the event online.
As time goes on society will embrace eSports even more but you've got inconsistent output quality from companies and resistance to embrace the scene by big players, most notably Nintendo. I don't see that changing any time soon, unfortunately. Traditional sports just don't have such challenges.
