Post cheat codes that have been permanently burned into your memory.

Yoshi's Island: Hold Select, press X, X, Y, B, A. Lets you play the minigames.

I didn't really use cheat codes unless it was Vice City.

You don't see a lot of games with cheat codes anymore.

Why do you think that is?

Modern games still do have cheat codes.

Many games have a developer console. Its usually locked down so that players cant access it. For example, you'd need to have a computer connected to your xbox, and you would need a debug copy of the game. In some games, players are allowed to access the console.

The console allows a lot more cheat codes with a lot more power. Depending on the game, you could summon any game object, move things to any location, unlock quests or doors, change the player avatar.

Additionally, developers found players have a wider range of skills. One reason to use cheat codes is that the game is more difficult than the player is willing to endure. So many games have difficulty settings, and those difficulty settings are more varied than they used to be (instead of easy, medium, hard they may have 5 or 7 difficulty settings, or even a difficulty slider).

Games also have more options than they used to, built-in. Editing the game experience is a bigger factor in the game's design.

Players have changed the way they play games, also. We used to rent games from Blockbuster Video, and over the course of a few days, we’d hack our way through as many levels as we could before we had to return it. Finding a cheat code or a secret passage or an exploit made you a hero. The internet barely existed, and sharing game secrets wasn't a thing you did on the internet.

Today, Ill sit and play a game with the internet browser open. I have access to several strategy guides with all the cheats, tricks, and exploits right there. What is the point of a developer hiding something if it's going to be broadcast to every single player within 3 days of release?

The mystique of finding cheat codes is gone.
I disagree with this guy's assertion that sharing game secrets wasn't a thing you did on the internet. I also disagree with his way of playing video games which makes him seem like a loose gut wimp. However, he does make some good points. We play games differently now. The cheats are there if you want to find them.

Most of the cheat codes I remember are for PC games. "LAIMLAME" turned on invincibility in 'Dark Forces'; "LAPOSTAL" gave you all the guns, equipment and full ammo. "Glittering prizes" gave you loads and loads of gold, lumber and oil in 'Warcraft II', and...was "there can be only one" the instant victory code, or did it just make all your guys ridiculously powerful? I can't remember.

Cheat Codes were originally a developer tool. They could jump to specific parts of the game, playtest certain things, inspect various aspects of the game more easily. They just don't really need to use codes to do that anymore. They morphed into something else as time went on, but basically when disc-based games came around, devs and players alike could just go through the back end more easily and not have to worry about arbitrary codes and the like.

Anyway, the only code I remember is Hard Mode in DKC3, except I don't really remember it, I just remember that it's something like LRLRLLLRRRLRLRLR

I don't remember any, not even the Konami code (I'm unsure of how to finish it, I know it's up+down+up+down+left+right+left+right something something... A+B Start? B+A Start? There's not a Select in there, right?

Same reason there's fewer/no unlockable costumes. It's DLC and microtransactions now, especially on mobile but consoles are increasingly doing this.

the konami code ends with B-A, and some games it was start and other games it was select-start

Well, that explains me not remembering it then. I never knew it varied, that's interesting.

Konami: Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start

Sonic 1 Level Select: Up Down Left Right Up Down Left Right A

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

I never knew that Sonic had a code. I'll definitely skip past that grind of a second zone next time I play.

^Problem is, it only works from the title screen, & only if you start inputting it soon enough. You'll hear a ring-collect sound if you did it right.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

I believe the rise of achievements is one of the reasons they don't have cheats as much now.

Anyway,

Aladdin level skip: ABBAABBA
THPS3 unlock all skaters: YOHOMIES

I know I still remember the level select and debug codes for Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and the cheats for both of the Tony Hawk's Underground games. I used to know the codes for Sonic 2 but even after looking them up recently they just aren't sticking in my head.

Konami code also because it was so prevalent. I remember it being Select Select Start, which is probably the same thing as just pressing Start.

I don't remember using a lot of cheats, but back then, the password systems were so convoluted that I kept a notebook of them.
Competition is a good thing. It's a chance to crush people.
