The American healthcare system sucks.

#1

Post by VG_Addict » Sat Mar 14, 2020 9:09 am

A new law was passed saying that people who take ADHD meds have to visit a doctor every 3 months to get their meds.

Why does the healthcare system make people jump through hoops to get the stuff they need?

My mom says my insurance might not cover all the doctor visits, so we might have to pay for my meds out of pocket.

The American healthcare system is a joke.

I haven't been to any other countries, but it's certainly not ideal here, especially if you're poor. I'm sure it could be worse but that's not very comforting...

I talked about my new insurance plan on another site, and someone told me to grow up.

So, I should just shut up and deal with an objectively terrible system like a good little sheep?

I think if you have genuine and reasonable issues with something then you should voice them, especially if there's pushback.

There's some that would say it's to kill the poor people, or keep them stuck in a hole, but in my opinion the biggest problem on the government side isn't corruption or greed so much as inefficiency in the system itself. I can see someone believing a three month check up as something to help those with ADHD. That's not to say corruption's not there and isn't a problem but even in that case, it's not very good at fleecing those that get sick. It just sort of hopes you hate paperwork and protocol more than it does. Nobody has time for that s**t.

I'd imagine in this specific case corruption *is* the problem, because Adderall is a controlled substance with black market use by people who don't need it. The three month rule was likely intended to help keep track of prescriptions and make pill mills harder to operate. Whether that's effective or not and whether it's better for ADHD patients are obviously separate questions.

Also, this may vary by state and insurer, as I'm not an expert on coverage, but since the visits are for a diagnosed condition and required by law, they should be treated differently than a regular doctor's appointment. It's worth calling your insurer and asking if you haven't already.

System still sucks, though.

Can I just weigh in and say that ADHD is an illness that literally makes "simple" tasks like scheduling a doctor's appointment feel like an enormous insurmountable gateway, so a 3-month recurring barrier between someone with ADHD and their meds is going to exacerbate an already problematic situation. Every time I go to the dentist I feel like I can't go through the ordeal of going onto a website and booking another one for another like 80 years. 3 months goes by so quickly, it is going to feel like there is no break between visits, not to mention the prohibitive out of pocket costs. This sucks. I'm sorry, VGA.

I have ADHD and general anxiety disorder and scheduling doctor's appointments tends to be hell for me

Health insurance covers your sickness!

...oh, your eyes? Those don't count. You need vision for that.
And your teeth? HECK no.
Skin? Nope.
Your mind? Haha, that's not even medicine!

While to be fair a lot of other countries have those foibles (Canada considers teeth to be somewhat of a luxury) but they're luxuries so they cost a LOT.

It's dumb that dental is considered luxury or cosmetic. Like, you need those to eat food, and they can be dangerous. Even just removing them can cause mental/emotional trauma. These aren't hangnails.

not to mention that teeth might erode or become broken in such a way that can lead to horrible infections, some of which can even be fatal.

dental health absolutely needs to be taken seriously

I've moved this thread to PPR on account of it being a controversial subject. Carry on.

Sorry for not contributing much to the ongoing topic of the American healthcare system - but VGA could you link me the source on this law? Suffering from ADHD, it worries me a lot, and I couldn't find anything on Google while trying to look into it.

Not only that, but if your teeth are broken and/or infected? It's EXTREMELY painful.

I have heard women describe it as being up there with childbirth.

Women have described it as worse than childbirth. I can imagine the only pain to exceed it may be some kind of barbaric testicular torture.

"i'm so sick of the torture tropes in spy movies. Let's do something different."

"Well Bond always sleeps with all these women but has no kids....?"

"Tom this is like the fifth time you've pitched us ball torture."

It's not implausible - Indy somehow still had Mutt despite being dragged behind a car in the first movie.
