How Do You Read?

Post by Random User » Mon Aug 24, 2015 6:38 am

I have personally always had a little voice in my head reading whatever I'm reading aloud. I was surprised when I learnt this is not how everyone reads, though. So now I am curious about VGF members.

Usually no voice. Sometimes I'll read with a voice in my head, but for whatever reason that makes it harder for me to actually process what I'm reading.

No I just kinda... read. I don't really know how to explain it like I use a voice when I'm writing but not when reading.

Huh. I'm pretty sure I use my own voice in my head. I read like I'm reading a book-on-tape. Dialogues have different voices than mine.

Voice. I almost completely forget important book information otherwise.

Depends. If I'm reading fast, like in chats, or texts, generally no voice. If I'm really trying to read seriously then I read with a mental voice.

Games sit in a flux. It's often either a fake voice I imagine for them or just mine or none.

No voice. It's silent while I read.

My voices change based on what I'm reading. If I'm reading third person narrations I often automatically imagine a Stephen Fry-like voice. If I'm reading a news article it's this generic voice that's kind of like mine. If I read something a female wrote then I imagine a generic female voice. Same thing with a male. If I really want to find something out I either don't have a voice in my head and just search for the parts I want or I'm actually reading it aloud to myself.

I can imagine a certain voice and tone when I'm reading things, but I'm not actually reading the words with that voice. It's hard to explain.

Simpler answer: I'm a silent reader.

Yeah the voice in my head tends to change depending on whether or not it's narration or straight text. I actually read all of the posts on here in different voices that I imagine for you guys depending on how you type, and I do the same in other places.

When I read, I'm kind of envisioning what's going on, man. Like, I can't read 'Shardik' and not imagine giant bear roaring and tearing sh*t up. I can't read 'Gunslinger' and not picture Roland shootin dudes in the face. Can't read 'Goon' without thinking of Goon and Franky kicking some monster ass, running zombies down, lightin 'em up with tommy guns. And like who pictures things without supplying his own audio.

I may not hear a voice, but that doesn't mean my brain-meats aren't giving me sound.

[EDIT: Goon and Franky always sound like Clancy Brown and Paul Giamatti respectively in my head, now, thanks to that c*ck-teasing never-gonna-happen trailer. Gods below, but I was hyped, and turns out it'll never happen. 'Goon' deserves a movie more than any of these rangy Marvel things. Ugh. Ugh forever.

Eh, depends on the medium I think. Not usually, though, I mean sometimes I'm barely conscious of the exact words I've read when I'm deep in a novel. The way it's delivered sets the tone, though.
I muttered 'light as a board, stiff as a feather' for 2 days straight and now I've ascended, ;aughing at olympus and zeus is crying

Same boat as Val. Sometimes trying to consciously read in a voice distracts me and makes me not actually process what I'm reading.

Oddly enough, it depends slightly. If I'm reading a book, I have a voice in my head as I'm going along, but when I'm reading an article or something like that, I don't.
