If given the choice in a video game... which do you choose? :D

I can only do evil runs of games that are either silly about it or that just aren't any good. In anything else I end up feeling terrible after about five minutes and going back to playing normally.

Val usually does a "good" run to begin with, and then later an "evil" one to see what it's like.

Varies from game to game with no real rhyme or reason. My first 'Mass Effect' run was pure renegade, 'Fallout 3' I went good guy first. 'Fable' I was good, 'Fable 2' I was evil (also super-corrupt), 'inFamous' I was evil, 'Catherine' I went blue, DAO I did all the more socially acceptible things my first playthrough (more because I didn't have the stats to pursue the sleazeball options).

It depends on the game. Beating up NPCs for no reason can be hilarious and fun, hence the GTA series. If there's a big social impact, I will tend to make myself a protagonist but will use saves to kill off a whole city just for the heck of it. It's really funny in Morrowind, and since the higher level characters like guards can kill you so easily early in the game it's nice to get one back on them for their rude comments and such.

what is good and what is evil in games where the paths are already pre-determined

now, WoW on a PvP server, that's some real good evil. My guildmaster recently followed a Human Warlock around trying to do a daily quest by constantly fearing her and killing the quest objective

that there is real evil

I try to stay neutral but I just do what I want sometimes, or do what is beneficial gameplay wise, or if a certain scenario makes me lean a certain way then I'll make an exception.

Also, as mentioned, rude NPCs need murder.

This exactly. Go rescue those orphans? Check. Sell them to pirates for a tidy profit? Check.

The example of GTA poses an interesting scenario. Sure, you're killing random people, stealing their cars, and hiding from the government... but you're still the good guy.

When I played Ultima Online, I was a blacksmith. I just wanted to mine and craft in peace. Then some stupid jerk came along and tried to kill me and my beetle.
Competition is a good thing. It's a chance to crush people.

First and best MMO. You could own actual houses and stuff, they had crazy events where the towns would be decimated by baddies, etc. Entire new player towns popped up along the main roads.

It felt more worthwhile because you could screw up easily and deal with more realistic consequences. I remember as a newb I walked through a moongate (teleportation spell) to an island and got stranded there, and then I tamed an army of like 20 stray dogs.

Another time I spent a week sitting on Lord British's throne and did not log out the whole time.

There was very little separation between normal players and PKs so there was a thriving bounty industry.

When I was younger I felt super bad about doing the bad side first. I felt like I was being judged. Now I don't really care. I go towards the canonical route, which usually happens to be good. Sometimes I play two files at the same time, one bad and one good. I play them depending on my mood. For example, if I want to kill my boss on a certain day then I play the evil side.

Getting stranded on an island and taming a small army of wild dogs sounds like the coolest thing a person could ever do.
