New Year's Traditions and Superstitions
Do you have any traditions/superstitions that you do at New Year?

Yeah, experiencing moderate anxiety and renewed awareness of depression are my traditions. I'm real fun and not a downer btw, as you can tell.

Re: New Year's Traditions and Superstitions
My family always has a picnic on the floor of the living room. Staple foods are pizza rolls, shrimp cocktails, crackers and cheese, and lil’ smokies. We either play games or watch a movie all together—this year we played Overcooked and Drawful. It was pretty great.

Re: New Year's Traditions and Superstitions
Sometimes I go to parties, sometimes I hang out and watch movies with my dad and eat queso. This year I was already on vacation so I didn’t need to do anything special. I’ve never been particularly drawn to this holiday.

Re: New Year's Traditions and Superstitions
Other than watching the year roll over on my PC clock with mild amusement, I don't typically do anything special.

Re: New Year's Traditions and Superstitions
I have the sleep schedule of a 60 year old, so I celebrate with Greenland and call it close enough at 10pm. Didn't even make it that late this year.
I did a hackathon back in the summer, but otherwise I can't remember the last time I was intentionally awake at midnight.

Re: New Year's Traditions and Superstitions
It's evidently meant to be good luck for the new year to eat herring on New Year's, and Ma Baensch, the gold standard, is headquartered right here in Milwaukee. (I prefer the kind that comes in sour cream and chives sauce to the regular sweet marinade. The latter isn't bad, it's just not my druthers.)
I remembered to have some. I also had smoked salmon, though really, that isn't a superstition, that's just '...ooh, smoked salmon. And I just got my holiday paycheck. Merry Christmas, me.'

Re: New Year's Traditions and Superstitions
OK SO, we have this stuff that latin families do:
~Eat 12 grapes as the clock strikes midnight (As the New Year’s Eve midnight countdown begins, eat 12 grapes making a wish for each one, representing the 12 months of the next year.)
~New Years Cleaning! (Clean the house; take a bath; or wash the pets and cars on New Year’s Eve for renewal. Sweep and mop from the inside outwards.)
~Suitcases around the block at midnight! (On New Year’s Eve at midnight, take empty suitcases for a walk outside; encircle the house or walk around the block for the distance to be traveled next year.)
~Eat tamales and shrimp cocktail with warm drinks!
My family hasn't done the suitcase thing in years but keep up with the others listed:)
Hope everyone had a wonderful new years day! Whether or not you celebrate it c:

Re: New Year's Traditions and Superstitions
My family traditions:
1. Eat twelve grapes - one for every month, along with champagne.
2. Dump water out the front door from a bucket. It's supposed to be a Cuban thing. It represents washing away all the bad vibes from the last year.
My own traditions:
1. Start reading a brand new book (This year it's Good Omens by Terry Prachett and Neil Gaiman)
2. Start playing a brand new game (This year it's The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild)
3. My friends and I are getting into the habit of timing a movie moment with the stroke of midnight. I started it last year with Star Wars and the explosion of the Death Star. It was going smoothly until someone accidentally sat on the remote and fast-forwarded the movie. I vainly tried to make calculations to figure out when to press play in order to get the right time at midnight. I was off by 7 seconds. This past NYE party, someone wanted to time it with The Two Towers when Théoden says "So it begins". He was off by a whole minute because we got distracted before realizing it was time to start the movie.

Re: New Year's Traditions and Superstitions
Our traditions are pretty general; we eat a bunch of hors d'oeuvres and play games with friends and family. :3

Re: New Year's Traditions and Superstitions
Movies (usually Marx Brothers) and snacks all evening, then we watch the ball drop at midnight.
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Re: New Year's Traditions and Superstitions
Last time the kids came home for Christmas (wanna say 2014), we were looking at the TV guide channel for something to watch whilst trimming the tree, and I saw 'Duck Soup' was on. We switched over to it just a couple minutes before the mirror scene. I'd never seen our entire family laugh so hard. Maxy was literally rofling by the end.
