Nintendo and competitive Smash.

What do you think of Nintendo's decision to not support the competitive Smash scene? I've heard Nintendo has actively tried to sabotage Smash's success. How have they done that?

Well for one they tried to block Melee from being at EVO in 2013, and their intimidating legal presence is what causes mods like Project M to shut down. Even when they do sponsor tournaments, the prize pool is generally still funded by admission fees and other grassroots support (and all it really accomplishes is having Nintendo's name on stream).

Generally when Nintendo actually sponsors a tournament for Smash, it tends to be their own weird house rules like the Smash Invitational in 2018 that aren't representative of how competitive players actually play the game. I guess it's got more wide appeal or whatever, but it's considerably doing its own thing instead of being part of a community standard of tournament operation.

As for Melee: I'm honestly against having Nintendo at Melee tournaments at all because I think things like UCF and Slippi are actually really good for the scene and Nintendo being Nintendo would undoubtedly not let that fly.

They definitely haven't sabotaged the success of the game. I definitely get a vibe from Sakurai that he's annoyed by the volume* of "competitive" players sorta overwhelming & choking out everyone else who wants to play the game other ways.

*I don't mean amount, I mean loudness.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

It'd be nice for Nintendo to support the Ultimate scene more, but I agree with DZ that them trying to do anything with the Melee scene after all these years would probably be a disaster.

I've never understood such sentiments. What does it mean that competitive players choke out non-competitive players? Most casuals probably don't even know anything about the competitive aspect.

It's not a sentiment; it's an observation. A very vocal minority contingent insists upon exclusively playing tourney rules, some to the extent of refusing to touch WoL because it's based on special rulesets. This affects online matchups & offline casual matches.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

hey now, my refusal to touch WoL isn’t because of special rule sets, I refuse to touch WoL because it’s a steaming garbage pile of shallow un-fun gameplay

WoL is okay but much longer than it needs to be and the difficulty curve is kind of weird. (all of the infamous hard fights are before Galleom) I liked the Castlevania and Zelda areas and I appreciate all the little references in the fights though.

^^Then I'm not talking about you. ;)

^Ehh. There's some hard stuff in the Dark Realm, & the boss rush is no picnic.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

i liked world of light but i also associate it with the honeymoon phase of ultimate's life where the game was still new and exciting. i definitely think it dragged on way too long (but i guess if you have that many spirits in the game, ehhh)

Nintendo doesn't give a single solitary about anything that's not going to make them money. They don't have their fingers on the pulse of the west. They never will. They really remind me of Apple. Minus the yearly revenue.

They just figure people will keep buying different games with the same recycled characters. So far they aren't wrong.

Sorry if this hurts anyone's feelings I like Nintendo but I'm so over it.

Except Nintendo charges less for underpowered hardware instead of more. ;)

I mean, people don't really play Smash Bros for its story mode, unless they need to unlock stuff.

LOL Facts. Definitely don't deserve this phone bill that I received for the 11.

^^ it's not my fault that Smash has a really fun engine but just 1v1 matches get boring, ok

it's not my fault that melee adventure and smash SSE kick absolute ass and smash 4 and smash ultimate are super lame by comparison because they expect me to just fight things and be entertained

Sakurai’s reasons for dropping SSE-style single player from 4 and Ultimate are baffling and upsetting
