Project AM2R Released
http://metroid2remake.blogspot.ca/
Fan remake of Metroid 2, released just in time for Metroid's 30th anniversary.
EDIT: Sites originally hosting the game received a take-down notice from Nintendo's legal representatives. There are still numerous functional links from the second page on, later in this thread, and the original torrent is still functional. - A.I.

Though if I can give one criticism/observation, it's that the new bosses the new bosses don't feel like bosses Nintendo would make...for better or for worse. They might be a bit overtuned in terms of how fast they attack and how much space their attacks can cover. That said, on Normal mode they really don't do that much damage vs what you can put out in exchange, and they can be pretty generous with mid-fight health pickups. Metroids have been more dangerous encounters for me, even late in the game.

Okay, having played the game quite a bit so far (past the first Gamma) I love it. I think in some ways, for me it is a little less exciting as I've played through Metroid II a few times before and as such, have the map pretty well memorised. It's definitely a solid piece of work, though, and far beyond most any fangames in terms of design and execution.
That said, I do agree that so far the bosses have been very aggressive. I think they have worked decently, but definitely don't read the same way a Nintendo boss normally might. That doesn't bother me, though, since I feel Nintendo is a bit formulaic at the best of times. I definitely could use some more space to work with in those early metroid fights, a some less ram-into-you fight patterns would be nice. The original metroids were tough enough already, and now that they've been altered they definitely feel more difficult.

I muttered 'light as a board, stiff as a feather' for 2 days straight and now I've ascended, ;aughing at olympus and zeus is crying

^ Unfortunately, that's correct.
It's already released and on the internet now though, so there's not much they can do about that.
